Forgive me for being behind on this season of Project Runway (sorry but without Heidi & Tim... I mean... it's gonna take some getting used to!), but I noticed on the second episode the challenge was called " the Future of Fashion" and the designers were to focus on designing around body modifications.
I remember a while ago we saw Kim Kardashian also troll our Insta feeds with pics of her rocking these "body modifications" as the new "fashion trend" before as well. Of course the trailblazer of plastic would bring this to the forefront, so no surprise there... but I question now what the hell are we promoting? Literally altering our bodies has now become a trend.
Maybe I'm stuck in the past...but maybe I just don't want to see people altering their bodies so much so to the point bone structures and body infrastructures in general must now coordinate with my top. Wtf has the world come to where now it's a trend to look inhuman?
Then again, if this is where the future is headed, who am I to stop it? I remember talking with my boyfriend a while ago about the future of fashion and he told me the future is basically now, we're only a few steps away from the fifth element era. Honestly, people have already been doing body modifications... we've seen the "face horns", large earlobes, split tongues, etc. all the folks on Ripley's Believe it or Not years ago. I guess since plastic surgery is so damn common for literally any and everything you can get done now, why not make it artsy?
But is it artsy, or spooky? Or just downright creepy? A part of me thinks some of it is cool because I love all types of art, but when did art become mutilation? So I have to think to myself are we promoting self-mutilation? And if that is what we are promoting then how do we love ourselves for all of our flaws? Are we promoting self-hate? Is this the future period? Altering yourself so much to the point where we are unrecognizable and inhuman...?
I guess time will tell...
